Darío de Regoyos is one of the most important Impressionist painters in Spain. He is a key figure in understanding the influence of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and how the ideas of modernity didn’t quite fit into a territory that aspired to be like its northern neighbors, but whose industrial and social development was far from them.
This friction between the desired modernity and the reality he encountered after his studies in Brussels is present throughout Regoyos’ work, where an Impressionist chromatic impulse he developed while painting the valleys of his native Cantabria clashes with his need to depict and denounce what he called ‘España Negra’ (Dark Spain).
This project was designed at 3TG Studio.
